mitered corners, you are a b*tch

Well I made great strides with my mum's quilt this weekend. The fabrics being a colour wheel inspired me some. Since anything too fancy is beyond me, I decided on a log cabin adaptation and got to work. Made some mistakes, rectified them as best I could. Managed to use pretty much all the fabric I had and saved the narrower strips for the binding. I have since added a linen border to make the quilt slightly bigger - it's supposed to be a lap quilt, so size isn't too much of an issue. Thank god for youtube and its tutorials. Even so, the mitered corners took some doing, unpicking, cursing, and doing again (and in some instances, again and again). Three out of four are good. The other one? Meh. Good enough. I have learnt that once it's finished, the little 'mistakes' are easy to ignore in light of the bigger picture. Now I have to get some batting, quilt it and sew on the binding. The more laborious part of the process, but I'm pleased with it so far - and I think my mum will be too.

In other news, we went to our first Christmas fair and the girls made some Christmas decos for the Canadian grandparents.

It was all I could do not to grab a paintbrush and have a go myself, but the little one insisted I leave her alone, and she did a lovely job. I pick them up at the end of the week, once they've been fired.

I really loved the pale pastel colours - they don't look too pastelly here, but they were, I assure you. Apparently (unfortunately?) they turn bright and bold on firing. Ah well.
