wip (and a whole lot of red)
Some days you just need something mindless, monotonous and distracting to work on. Sewing the straight lines of a quilt, over and over again, does it for me. One of my WIPs (Works in Progress) is a single quilt, which was to be built around the brightly coloured Chinese fabric I have from Hong Kong.
In the end, that fabric became a bit player in the pattern, rather than the star of the show. Too diva-ish, it jumped out from the other simpler reds once I started piecing the quilt together so it was relegated to a minor role, which I quite like.
Learning from previous mistakes (of which there have been many), I pieced the quilt row by row, lining up the sewn pieces to make sure I hadn't doubled up a fabric or was going to end up with horizontal lines across the final quilt. OK, I made one mistake but I dare you to find it (or point it out...)
I love the simplicity of choosing, cutting, positioning and sewing the patchwork pieces. Straight line sewing is my kind of thing. In fact, I got somewhat obsessional about it and was quickly finished. Then I sewed all those pieces together to form the top of the quilt (it's not rocket science) and finally quilted it using an old (clean) single mattress protector quilt that I had and backed it some red gingham fabric that's been lying around for ever, waiting for just such a purpose.
Of course, there were snags along the way - and it's not finished of course. Some problem(s) with the bobbin had me practically taking the sewing machine apart. After some cursing, deep breathing and reminders to "just walk away, Viv, walk away", I eventually got my mojo back and the problems were miraculously resolved.
Now, a border. More red or some of my favourite linen, I wonder...?
Listening.
